On Monday, January 16, 2012, Kate Horwick from the National Search Dog Foundation (SDF) picked up dogs from a facility in Valencia, CA., to be tested for viability as an urban search dog. Many of these dogs were abandoned on the sides of roads and/or left in shelters to die. If they pass the test, SDF trains them, has them FEMA certified and pairs them with handlers to find disaster survivors. Roy, not ready for training yet, was left behind and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. (Photo by Victoria Linssen / Brooks Institute ©2012.)

On Tuesday, January 17, 2012, Firefighter Gary Durian is paired with his new dog Tanker at Sundowners Kennel in Gilroy, CA. Durian, a veteran dog handler, helped search for survivors during the Haiti, New Orleans, Missouri and Japan disasters. After his dog Baxter attacked a stray dog during the Japan search, Durian made the painful decision to retire him. Receiving a new dog was an emotional experience for Durian.
